Considering a city break out of Ireland this winter? With bargain flights currently available to many beautiful European cities, Christmas and New Year may well be the perfect time to soak up some foreign culture and let your hair down. So what are the best looking deals for European city breaks at the moment? Check the web for some cheap flights.

Berlin’s popularity is ever increasing for visitors eager for a short city break. As a centre for youth, culture and art, Germany’s capital boasts a fantastic nightlife for music with clubs ranging from the techno hall Tresor and the popular Kitkatclub. Similarly, the city is also famed for its many diverse museums and galleries that include the Bauhaus-Archive and the Jewish Museum alongside what is often regarded as the world’s largest erotic museum. If it’s beauty you’re after, Stockholm in Sweden has been voted as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Situated on fourteen islands and next to Lake Malaren, the area is also known as The Venice of the North and is no doubt a uniquely picturesque and romantic destination. The impressive Drottningholm Palace, home of the Swedish royal family, is a must-see for tourists, with its grandiose architecture and fantastic gardens in Baroque and English styles.

Unlike Stockholm, the entire city centre of Bruges in Belgium is a World Heritage Site. Waterways and canals are abundant also, whilst the medieval architecture is a big draw for tourists. Sites include the Church of Our Lady, the second tallest brickwork tower in the world at 1,223 metres, as well as the Groeningemuseum which features work by Flemish and Belgian artists such as Jan van Eyck and Dirk Bouts. Nice in France has been a popular winter destination since the English started visiting in the 18th Century. Today it is a great place for relaxation with the chaises bleues at the Promenade des Anglais that runs along the Baie des Anges. The city also offers a Botanical Garden, as well as The Saint Nicolas Orthodox Cathedral: another landmark with links to Nice’s historical reputation as a luxury tourist destination.

Also worth checking out is St. Petersberg. The former capital of the Russian empire is home to a historic city centre which features Baroque and neoclassical architecture. Situated at Zayachy Island are the Peter and Paul Fortress and Cathedral which include the mint building and a museum. For such a large city (4.6 million inhabitants), St. Petersberg has a uniquely low skyline in keeping with its historical architecture.
