Start making those connections now

“College is great, like I’ve said in the past, but just talking and getting to know your classmates won’t get you anywhere. Even if you don’t know where you’re going to end up, you still need to focus on getting some connections formed. You know, people who can give you advise and refer you the bigger people they know.

First of all, you need to make an online identity, put yourself out on the internet via a blog. It doesn’t have to be any niche, it can be personal. If you talk about how much you want to be a singer, the right people will eventually find you and give you an offer or simply advise you on your strengths and weaknesses. The middle people of the industry are always searching on Google, trying to figure out what’s being said about their company and what’s the general opinion. Talent scouts are always on the lookout for some interesting people to recruit, and so are some directors and hobbyist filmmakers. I see it all the time, being among these people (they come for me for freelancing).

Don’t just try and follow every celebrity you can on the internet, as these are really the wrong people to be talking to. Yeah, you get some insight into their life, but they’re forced to sign documents that keep them from telling you everything. Most are even told not to bother and their management/agencies deals with replies anyway. Now on the other hand, it’s a great idea to contact agencies and people that represent those agencies because they can pretty much answer all your questions truthfully.

It used to be said that a lot of these people were found on the streets back in the day, but that’s not really the case anymore with the internet being the greatest way to market yourself. Most labels and management teams want to find people that can market themselves and keep them from spending too much money. I’m not saying that you can become a star overnight, but just putting yourself out there is a great way of making steps closer to your goal.
