The Top Ten Most Cringe Inducing Pop Song Lyrics
pAs an internet copywriter, I listen for words. Andbr /being a songwriter (albeit, an obscure one) myself, I appreciate what goes into the lyric writing part of it-matching words to appropriate music, trying to come up with meaning and lyrical hooks. /p
pBut sometimes, writers get a case of the word dropsys-lapses into bad grammar, lazy language or words that bewilder. Some even succumb to the most dreaded of all writer ailments- banality. Cliche ridden drivel./p
pPlease note that many of the song writers songs spotlighted below also have written wonderful, even profound lyrics. /p
pPlus, I write, I love to write and I love words. /p
pNot these, though./p
pTodays the Day by America/p
pNot that Im the grammar Gestapo but the last two lines of this song by grate on my inner and outer ear./p
pHold me close br /You turn nighttime into day br /And youre the most br /Brightest star that lights my way/p
pThe most brightest? What is that? Its either the most bright or the brightest. Did we miss that elementary school grammar class? ARGHHHH!/p
pI Am I Said, Crackin Rosie and Holly Holy by Neil Diamond/p
pHere are three lines bullets by the prince lyrical bewilderment- Neil Diamond. In fact, these are so bereft of clarity, they could have defined the sixties- a hazy decade if there ever was one./p
pI Am I Said- I am I said to no one there and no one heard at all, not even the chairbr /Cracklin Rosie- Cracklin Rosie get on board- we gonna ride till there aint no more to gobr /Holly Holy- Holly Holy Night, dream of only me/p
pNow, I dont know much, but suspect it takes lot of nerve (or numbness) to sing these words, written in the late sixties and early seventies, in the current century./p
pAfrica by Toto/p
pEven though the meaning of the words is a mystery to me, I unfortunately really like this tune. Thats what makes it so vexing./p
pIts gonna take a lot to drag me away from youbr /Theres nothing that a hundred men or more could ever dobr /I bless the rains down in Africabr /Gonna take some time to do the things we never had/p
pNo matter how much research I do, I cant make sense of this chorus. It appears that every line except the first is, well, incomprehensible.br /But my favorite is the last line. I have just one question about it- /p
pHOW DO YOU DO THE THINGS WE NEVER HAD???/p
pTime of Your Life by Green Day/p
pTattoo some memories and dead skin on trial br /For what its worth, it was worth all the while/p
pNot only is the first line of this couplet unclear, its loaded with some unpleasant images (dead skin, on trial, tattoo)./p
pSo, instead of that line how about this?/p
pBreathe deep, and reflect inside a smilebr /For what its worth, it was worth all the while (this is a great line, I think)/p
pMacarthur Park by Richard Harris/p
pMacarthur Park is melting in the dark br /all the sweet green icing flowing down/p
pAs if that isnt bad enough, this distressing cake metaphor goes on-/p
pSomeone left the cake out in the rain/p
pAnd on-/p
pI dont think I can take itbr /Cause it took so long to bake it/p
pAnd on-/p
pAnd Ill never have that recipe againbr /OH NO!/p
pOH NO is right!/p
pFly Songs /p
pI go into cringe mode when I hear a song with the word fly in the title. You can almost plot the rhymes the first time you hear them. Hmmm- could the next rhyme be sky- or maybe- high? /p
pFly Away by Lenny Kravitz/p
pFly Awaybr /I wish that I could flybr /Into the skybr /So very high br /Just like a dragonfly/p
pI Believe I Can Fly by R. Kelly/p
pI believe I can flybr /I believe I can touch the skybr /I think about it every night and daybr /Spread my wings and fly awaybr /I believe I can soarbr /I see me running through that open doorbr /I believe I can flybr /I believe I can flybr /I believe I can fly/p
pI dont know if lines get any more banal or cliched then this. However, I dont know that the word dragonfly has appeared in too many tunes. Or if in fact, they can fly high (Though, they do fly fast I discovered- buzzing along at a top speed of up to 60mph)./p
pHaving My Baby by Paul Anka/p
pBut from the songwriter who gave us the classic line- I ate it up and spit it out from My Way, comes lyrics that well, hit a low that few lyrics have reached./p
pThe need inside you, I see it showinbr /Whoa, the seed inside ya, baby, do you feel it growin?br /Are you happy you know it? That yourebr /Havin my baby-br /Didnt have to keep itbr /Wouldnt put ya through itbr /You could have swept it from your lifebr /But you wouldnt do it, no, you wouldnt do it/p
pDecorum prevents me from going on./p
pBut where theres banality, majesty exists, where theres lack of comprehension, clarity rules and where there are cliches, poetry soars. /p
